The first Tennis in the Park event has been hailed as a major success as Tennis Shropshire officials now begin to look forward to the second Great British Tennis Weekend of the year.

Many families took the opportunity to introduce children to tennis during a fun-filled weekend at Attingham Park, near Shrewsbury, with hundreds of youngsters encouraged to pick up a racket.

There were lots of happy faces as visitors of all ages were invited to give tennis a go and take part in a number of fun challenges using equipment supplied by the Tennis Factory under the direction of volunteers and coaches from local clubs.

Chris Hinks, chairman of Tennis Shropshire, said “We were very pleased how it all went with Sunday busier than the Saturday with good numbers coming along to join in the fun.

It was a great family event which attracted lots of young people and also their parents who enjoyed using the fun Tennis Factory equipment.

We are certainly going to repeat the event next year and the response from the LTA officials was very encouraging. They are now keen to roll out events of this nature nationally.

Thanks to all the coaches and volunteers from the many local clubs who generously gave their time and supported Tennis in the Park.”

Attention now turns towards the second of four Great British Tennis Weekends this year with a number of county venues throwing open their doors on either Saturday or Sunday.
